Six Months in a Two-Dog Household
The Roomba j7+ spent six months as the primary floor cleaning robot in a 1,400 square foot home with two Labrador Retrievers.
The dogs shed year-round, have had indoor accidents, and occupy most floor space of the main level.
The j7+ ran on a daily schedule, cleaning the kitchen, hallway, living room, and dining room each morning.
The results: the j7+ avoided every pet waste instance placed in its path during the test period.
PrecisionVision: What It Does
PrecisionVision is iRobot's computer vision obstacle avoidance system, trained to identify pet waste, power cords, socks, and other common robot vacuum obstacles.
When the j7+ detects an obstacle, it routes around it and marks its position on the map, you receive a notification with a photo of the detected object.
In practice, the system is reliable for solid pet waste at normal room lighting.
It is less reliable in very low light or when the obstacle is near a wall that limits the robot's routing options.
Navigation and Mapping
The j7+ uses a combination of cameras and sensors for navigation and mapping.
In practice, camera navigation at this tier performs comparably to LiDAR for single-floor systematic cleaning, the j7+ cleans in methodical rows and covers 90%+ of accessible floor area per run.
The limitation of camera vs.
LiDAR appears in two specific scenarios: very dark rooms (the camera requires ambient light to navigate) and rooms with many reflective surfaces (glass tables, mirrors).
Brush Design: the Pet Hair Advantage
The dual rubber extractor design is iRobot's most significant pet household advantage.
Rubber extractors deform around debris rather than sweeping it, hair wraps around the surface but does not embed in bristles.
In six months of testing with two heavy-shedding Labs, the brush roll required cutting only once, and that was hair wrapped at the bearing end rather than embedded in the brush surface.
Roborock's rubber brush rolls (on the S8 series) achieve comparable results and are arguably easier to clean.
Performance on Different Surfaces
Hardwood: excellent, the rubber extractors and 1500Pa standard suction mode handle dust, pet hair, and small debris completely.
Low carpet (under 0.5 inches): excellent, boost mode activates automatically and suction increases to clear embedded hair.
Medium carpet (0.5 to 0.75 inches): good, boost mode handles everyday pet hair on medium carpet.
Dense accumulations from extended periods without cleaning may require a second pass.
Self-Emptying: the Clean Base
The Clean Base Automatic Dirt Disposal uses suction to pull debris from the robot's 0.4L bin into a sealed AllergenLock bag inside the base.
The base holds approximately 60 days of debris from a two-dog household before the bag requires replacement.
The emptying cycle runs immediately when the robot docks and takes 8 to 12 seconds.
At approximately 75 dB, it is audible in adjacent rooms.
The IRobot App
The iRobot app is functional without being feature-excessive.
Room labeling, cleaning schedules, suction mode selection, and no-go zone placement are all accessible and clear.
The app stores cleaning history with the duration and area cleaned per run.
The notification system (which sends photos of detected obstacles) is the most unique app feature in this class.
Who Should Buy the J7+
Buy the j7+ if: you have dogs in the household, especially dogs with a history of indoor accidents.
Pet waste avoidance is not a luxury feature for dog households, it is the feature that determines whether using a robot vacuum is responsible.
Consider the Roomba i3+ EVO instead if: you have cats but no dogs.
The i3+ EVO has the same rubber extractor design and self-emptying at a significantly lower price, and pet waste avoidance is not required for cat-only households.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Roomba j7+ actually avoid pet waste?
In our six-month test with two dogs, the j7+ avoided every instance of pet waste placed deliberately in its path. iRobot's PrecisionVision obstacle avoidance is specifically trained on pet waste and has the strongest track record of any model. iRobot backs this with their Promise: if the j7+ runs over pet waste, they replace the robot.
How does the j7+ compare to the j7 (without the plus)?
The j7 and j7+ are identical robots. The only difference is the Clean Base Automatic Dirt Disposal (the self-emptying dock). The j7+ includes the dock; the j7 does not.
Does the Roomba j7+ mop?
The j7+ is vacuum-only. For Roomba mopping, the Roomba Combo j5+ or Roomba Combo j9+ add a retractable mop pad. The Combo j5+ includes PrecisionVision and pet waste avoidance with mopping.
How loud is the Roomba j7+?
In standard mode: approximately 65 dB, comparable to a normal conversation. In boost mode (for carpet): approximately 70 dB. The self-emptying dock emptying cycle is the loudest operation: approximately 70 to 75 dB for 8 to 12 seconds. Most users describe it as loud but brief and acceptable.
