  • Thinner material punctures more easily on pool ladders and rough coping
  • Less heat retention than thicker 12 or 16-mil covers
  • At 20x40 the total sheet is still heavy and unwieldy to remove by hand despite the thinner mil rating

Compare the top picks

Torn between our leading picks? These side-by-side comparisons settle it.

How we chose these picks

Every pick below earned its place through documented strengths, verified specifications, consistent praise in reputable reviews, and owner-feedback patterns. We don't sell placements, and we don't invent test scores.

Mistakes buyers often make

  • Buying on brand name alone instead of matching features to your actual use case.
  • Overpaying for headline specs you'll never use, define must-haves first.
  • Ignoring size, compatibility, and ongoing costs (filters, accessories, refills).
  • Trusting star ratings without reading what owners complain about after 6 months.

How we chose these picks

  • We started from manufacturer specifications and feature lists, the verifiable foundation.
  • We weighed reputable independent reviews from established tech and consumer publications.
  • We read large volumes of verified-owner feedback to find patterns in reliability and satisfaction.
  • We scored value: what you get for the price, not just absolute performance.
  • We excluded products with thin, suspicious, or heavily incentivized review profiles.

We don't claim hands-on testing we haven't done. Assessments synthesize manufacturer specifications, reputable independent reviews and documented owner feedback. Read our methodology.

Before you buy

Buying guide

How to choose: the factors that matter

  • Capacity and sizing, Measure your space and your actual use before falling for bigger-is-better. The right size is the one that fits your routine, not the spec sheet's maximum.
  • Build quality and materials, Heavier-gauge materials, tight tolerances, and solid joints outlast thin, rattly construction. In reviews, look for longevity comments over first-impression praise.
  • Ease of use and setup, Clear instructions, intuitive controls, and minimal assembly separate daily drivers from garage ornaments.
  • Maintenance and cleaning, Whatever you buy will need cleaning. Removable, dishwasher-safe, or wipe-clean parts get maintained; fiddly ones get neglected.
  • Warranty and support, A multi-year warranty signals the manufacturer expects it to last. Check what's actually covered, motors and frames matter more than accessories.

The bottom line

If you want the short answer: the top pick above suits most buyers, the value pick suits tight budgets, and the specialist picks suit specific needs. Match the pick to your use case, not to the hype.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best inground pool covers right now?

Our top pick is the WaterWarden Premium Pool Safety Cover for 12x20 Ft In-Ground Pool (best overall), because genuine weight-bearing barrier, not just a debris shieldand classified under ASTM F1346. The runner-up is the WaterWarden Solid Vinyl Pool Safety Cover, Fits 18x36 Ft Rectangle, followed by the GLI Secur-A-Pool 18x36 Ft Rectangular Mesh Safety Cover with Center End Step.

Is the WaterWarden Premium Pool Safety Cover for 12x20 Ft In-Ground Pool worth it?

For most buyers, yes. It ranks #1 in our inground pool covers research, though requires a cover pump since rainwater and snowmelt pool on the solid surface.

Why do inground pool covers need different sizing than above-ground covers?

Above-ground pool covers hook to the top rail of the pool wall using an elastic cable or winch-and-cable system, so the cover only needs to match the pool diameter plus a few inches of overlap. Inground pool covers anchor to the surrounding deck, which sits at ground level, so the cover has to extend well past the water's edge onto the coping and deck itself. Standard inground winter covers add a 4 to 5-foot overlap on every side (a 20x40 pool needs roughly a 25x45 cover), and safety covers are measured to the exact deck anchor points, which is why safety covers are far more often custom-fit than stock-sized. Buying an above-ground-style cover for an inground pool will leave gaps at the edges regardless of how it is anchored.

Do inground pools need a safety cover, or is a winter tarp enough?

That depends entirely on who has access to the pool. If small children, pets, or anyone unable to swim can reach the pool area unsupervised, a winter tarp is not adequate protection, it is not weight-rated and can fail catastrophically under a person's weight, especially once pooled rainwater or snowmelt sits on top of it. Local and state codes in many areas require a compliant barrier (fence, cover, or both) around residential pools; an ASTM F1346-rated safety cover satisfies the cover portion of that requirement in jurisdictions that allow it. If the pool area is already fully fenced with a self-latching gate and unsupervised access isn't a realistic risk, a winter tarp is a reasonable and much cheaper choice for keeping debris and sun out during the off season.

How long does an inground pool cover actually last?

Winter tarps: 3 to 10 years depending on gauge and UV exposure, with warranties from Robelle and similar brands scaling from 8-year to 20-year based on the scrim weight (heavier oz/yd2 fabric lasts longer and resists tearing from accumulated snow or ice). Mesh safety covers: 10 to 15 years is typical before the mesh weave degrades enough to reduce UV blockage and strength; the webbing and springs often need replacement sooner than the mesh itself. Solid safety covers: 12 to 20 years for the vinyl material, though grommets and anchor straps are wear items that get replaced along the way. Solar covers used on an inground pool during swim season see the shortest lifespan, 3 to 6 years, because UV and pool chemical exposure break down the bubble laminate faster than any other cover type.

Can a solar cover be used on an inground pool year-round?

Not effectively, and it isn't recommended as a year-round solution. A solar cover left on through winter in a freeze-prone climate can be damaged by ice forming on and around it, and it provides no protection against heavy snow load or debris the way a proper winter cover does. During active swim season, a solar cover on an inground pool works exactly the same as on an above-ground pool: it floats directly on the water and needs a reel or manual removal system sized for the larger surface area (inground rectangular solar covers 20x40 and up get heavy and are typically paired with an in-deck or above-deck reel rather than removed by hand).
