Uneven mixing, streaks of flour, undermixed corners, or ingredients not incorporated, is one of the most common stand mixer complaints. Most causes are adjustable or fixable without service.
Work through these in order, the most common causes come first.
Before investigating any other cause, adjust the beater clearance. This single adjustment resolves the majority of uneven mixing complaints, specifically bottom-of-bowl unmixed ingredients and streaks in finished batter. The dime test (KitchenAid tilt-head models): Place a dime flat on the center of the bowl floor
Even a perfectly adjusted stand mixer with the correct attachment requires occasional manual bowl scraping for thorough ingredient incorporation. Planetary mixing sweeps the bowl but does not push ingredients back from the sides the way a human with a spatula does. Rule of thumb: scrape once after adding each major ingredient group (dry ingredients, wet ingredients, eggs).

The test: place a dime flat on the center of the bowl floor. Lower the flat beater to mixing position. The beater should just brush the dime, sliding it without lifting it. If the beater clears the dime without touching: the clearance is too large and ingredients at the bowl bottom will be undermixed. Adjust the screw on the inside of the head collar counterclockwise to lower the beater. Re-test until the dime test passes.
Usually: beater clearance is too high (the beater does not reach the bowl bottom). Fix: adjust the beater clearance screw. Less commonly: overfilled bowl, wrong attachment (dough hook instead of flat beater), or a worn beater that sits crooked. Start with the clearance adjustment, it resolves the majority of bottom-of-bowl unmixed ingredient complaints.
The flex edge beater's silicone scraper edge sweeps the bowl sides during normal operation, reducing the frequency of manual scraping needed. However, it does not reach the area just above the beater path or the very top of the bowl sides. For most recipes, the flex edge beater reduces manual scraping from 3 to 4 times per recipe to 1 to 2 times, a meaningful convenience improvement but not a complete replacement for manual scraping in complex recipes.
