How to fix it
Work through these in order, the most common causes come first.
The Sealing Ring: Most Common Culprit
In electric pressure cooker troubleshooting, the sealing ring causes or contributes to the majority of pressurization failures. This is the first thing to check because it is the most common cause and the easiest to diagnose. Signs that the sealing ring needs replacement: Visible cracks or splits (even hairline cracks prevent full sealing)
Stovetop Pressure Cooker Pressurization Issues
Stovetop pressure cookers fail to pressurize for different reasons than electric models: Gasket failure: the rubber gasket in the lid performs the same sealing function as the Instant Pot sealing ring. Inspect it for cracks or deformation. Replace annually for regular use.

Incorrect lid alignment: stovetop lids must align with the pot handle to seat correctly.
Confirm the lid lock is engaged completely.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my Instant Pot say burn instead of pressurizing?
The burn notice on an Instant Pot means the sensor detected an overheated pot bottom before pressure was reached. The most common cause is thick sauces or starches (tomato sauce, thick soups) that can scorch on the bottom before the liquid generates enough steam. Solution: add more thin liquid (water or broth), deglaze the pot bottom after sautéing with scraping, or layer ingredients with the dense sauce on top rather than on the bottom.
How long should it take an Instant Pot to come to pressure?
Typically 10 to 15 minutes for a full 6 Qt pot, 5 to 10 minutes for smaller quantities. Cold food from the refrigerator, large volumes of liquid, and frozen ingredients all increase time to pressure. If the pot has not pressurized after 20 to 25 minutes, something is preventing pressure buildup, check the sealing ring and valve position.
Can a damaged sealing ring cause the Instant Pot not to pressurize?
Yes, a cracked, deformed, warped, or improperly seated sealing ring is the most common cause of Instant Pot pressurization failure. Remove the ring, inspect it under good light for cracks or deformation, and confirm it is seated evenly in all points of the lid track. Replace the sealing ring if any damage is visible or if it does not return to its original shape when stretched.
