The Four Decisions

Most Instant Pot buying decisions reduce to four questions in order: (Size for your household) (Interface preference and feature needs) Standard or Duo Crisp?

(Air fry capability vs separate appliance) Full price or sale price?

Size First

The 6-quart is the assumed size for all standard Instant Pot recipes.

It handles 4 pounds of pulled pork, a whole chicken, 8-serving batches of soup or chili, and 3 cups of dried beans or rice.

If your household of 2 to 5 people wants to make standard recipe portions: the 6-quart is the right size.

The 8-quart is for: households of 6 or more eating from a single pot, active meal preppers who make 10-serving batches, and cooks who regularly work with 5 to 8-pound whole cuts that do not physically fit in a 6-quart insert.

Interface Preference

Instant Pot Duo: selector dial rotates between functions.

Time is set with + and - buttons.

Simple, durable, easy to clean.

Less intuitive for first-time users who have never touched a pressure cooker.

Instant Pot Pro: full touchscreen.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Instant Pot Pro worth it vs the Duo?

The Pro is worth it for households that will use the premium features: adjustable pressure in 1-PSI increments (useful for precise recipes calling for exact pressures), up to 5 saved cooking programs for frequently repeated recipes, and the touchscreen for users who find it more intuitive. The Pro is not worth it over the Duo if you will primarily use pre-set programs and never adjust custom pressure. The underlying hardware (insert, sealing ring, element power, pressure range) is the same. If you just want a pressure cooker: buy the Duo.

What should I know before using an Instant Pot for the first time?

Five things before your first cook: (1) Run a water test before your first food recipe, add 3 cups of water, seal the lid, and pressure cook on High for 3 minutes with a 5-minute natural release. This confirms the unit is sealing correctly and shows you the full pressure-cook cycle with no food risk. (2) The sealing ring must be seated in the lid groove before sealing, if it is not seated, the unit cannot build pressure. (3) The minimum liquid requirement is 1 cup; more liquid means more steam and a longer preheat time to pressurization. (4) The float valve (the small metal pin on the lid) must be in the up position before pressure is reached, it rises automatically when pressure is sufficient. (5) Never try to open the lid while the float valve is in the up position. The lid is locked while pressurized.

Is the Instant Pot the same as a multi-cooker?

Multi-cooker is the category name; Instant Pot is the most well-known brand. A multi-cooker combines pressure cooking, slow cooking, rice cooking, steaming, sautéing, and keep-warm in one appliance. The 7-in-1 or 9-in-1 designation on Instant Pot models refers to the number of built-in cooking modes, not the number of components. Other multi-cooker brands include Ninja Foodi (which adds air fry), Breville Fast Slow Pro, Cuisinart Electric Pressure Cooker, and Crock-Pot Express Crock. The primary performance driver across multi-cooker brands is pressure accuracy, how reliably the unit reaches and maintains the stated pressure level. Instant Pot has the largest recipe ecosystem (books, websites, videos) which is a meaningful usability advantage for households following recipes rather than improvising.

How much counter space does an Instant Pot require?

The Instant Pot Duo 6-quart footprint is approximately 12.2 inches wide by 12.2 inches deep and 12.5 inches tall. The 8-quart is approximately 13.6 by 13.6 by 14.0 inches. These are larger appliances, the 6-quart is roughly the footprint of a large blender. The 8-quart is significantly larger and heavier (approximately 13.4 pounds empty). For small kitchens: the 6-quart fits on a standard 24-inch-deep counter with the cord managed; the 8-quart may crowd the counter. Both store on cabinet shelves when not in use, though the 8-quart weight (lifting a full 8-quart with food inside at approximately 25+ pounds) is a consideration. If storage space is limited: the 6-quart is more manageable.
