Our verdict
The Instant Pot Duo Mini is a reliable, well-built small pressure cooker that suits one or two people perfectly. Its only real drawback is the size itself, so choose the 6-quart Duo if you cook for a family or batch-cook.
The 3-quart version of the Duo, sized for one or two people and small kitchens.

Who should buy it?
A good fit if you…
- Singles and couples
- Dorm rooms, offices, RVs and small kitchens
- Cooks who mainly make rice, oats, eggs and small batches
- Owners of a large Instant Pot who want a second pot for sides
Look elsewhere if you…
- Families of four or more
- Batch cooking for the week
- Whole chickens and large roasts
- Cooks who rely on 6-quart recipes without adapting them
What 3 Quarts Actually Holds
Pressure cookers can only be filled to about two-thirds for most foods and halfway for beans, grains and foamy foods. In practice, the Duo Mini makes about two to three servings of stew, around 3 cups of dry rice or a pound or two of chicken thighs.
That is ideal for singles, couples, dorms and RVs. Families of four or more and anyone who batch-cooks for the week are better served by the 6-quart Duo, which is the most widely supported size for recipes.
Recipes and the Size Problem
Most Instant Pot recipes online are written for 6-quart models. Many scale down by halving ingredients, but you still need the minimum liquid Instant Brands recommends for the pot to reach pressure, so check the manual rather than simply halving the water.
Whole chickens and large cuts like a 3-pound pork shoulder generally don't fit. Cut meat into smaller pieces or choose a bigger model if those are staples.
What It Does Well
Rice, oatmeal, hard-boiled eggs, beans and small soups are where the Mini shines. It heats up and comes to pressure a little faster than larger models because there is less volume.
The stainless steel inner pot doesn't depend on a nonstick coating, so it holds up to scrubbing and metal utensils. It is dishwasher safe.
Limitations
At 700 watts, sautéing is slower than on a stovetop, so browning meat takes patience. The Mini also lacks some newer features in the Duo Plus and Pro lines, like sterilize programs or a quick-release button.
The silicone sealing ring absorbs odors over time. Many owners keep a second ring for savory dishes and one for sweets or yogurt; replacement rings are inexpensive.
Accessories and Ownership
Accessories made for 6-quart models won't fit. Look for items labeled for the 3-quart size, including steamer baskets and silicone lids. Instant Brands sells replacement sealing rings and inner pots, which helps the appliance last for years.

Frequently asked questions
How many people does a 3-quart Instant Pot feed?
Typically one to three people, depending on the dish. Pressure cooking limits fill to two-thirds, or half for beans and grains.
Can I use 6-quart recipes in the 3-quart Instant Pot?
Many scale down by halving ingredients, but keep at least the minimum liquid Instant Brands recommends for your model so it can reach pressure.
Is the inner pot nonstick?
No. The Duo Mini uses a stainless steel inner pot, which is durable and dishwasher safe.
