Fix a drawing tablet that won't connect, loses pressure sensitivity, or has a pen that doesn't register. Step-by-step troubleshooting for Wacom, Huion, and XP-Pen tablets on Windows and Mac.
Work through these in order, the most common causes come first.
Before any software troubleshooting: disconnect the USB cable from both the tablet and the computer, wait 10 seconds, and reconnect. A surprising number of connection failures are resolved this way. If you're using a USB hub, plug directly into a port on the computer instead.
The tablet driver runs as a background service. If it crashed or failed to start: Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) Look for Wacom_Tablet.exe, HuionTablet.exe, or PentabletService.exe
Driver corruption is the most common cause of persistent issues: Download the current driver from the manufacturer's website (not from Windows Update or the disc) Uninstall the existing driver through Control Panel / System Preferences, not just by deleting files
Windows Ink creates conflicts with many drawing applications. When Windows Ink is active, pressure data sometimes routes through Windows instead of the tablet driver: Open the tablet driver software Find the "Mapping" or "Options" tab
The tablet may be working correctly but the application is set to ignore pressure. In Photoshop, click the brush tool, open the brush settings, and confirm "Shape Dynamics" has "Size Jitter" set to "Pen Pressure." In Clip Studio Paint, check the Sub Tool Detail window for pressure curve settings.
Open the tablet driver settings and find the diagnostic or test area. Move the pen across the surface, you should see the cursor move. Apply pressure, the pressure meter should respond.
USB ports on the same hub share bandwidth. A high-bandwidth device on the same hub (external SSD, webcam) can crowd out the tablet. Try a USB port on the other side of the computer, or on a different chipset.

USB-C to USB-A adapters sometimes fail to carry the data lines a tablet needs.
Some VPN clients, screen recorders, and pen-related software conflict with tablet drivers: Screen capture software that hooks into pen events (Lasso, Snip & Sketch in extended mode) VPNs that intercept device communications (rare but reported) Old versions of Photoshop that pre-date the tablet's driver If the tablet works immediately after a clean Windows startup but fails after certain programs load, use the Windows Task Manager startup tab to identify and disable potential conflicts one at a time.

The most common causes are: an outdated or corrupted tablet driver, the application not receiving pressure data from the driver (check the application's brush settings), or a Windows Ink conflict.
