Considering the Baratza Encore ESP? Here's what the specs, reputable reviews, and owner feedback actually say, strengths, limitations, and fit.

Fit check

Who should buy it?

A good fit if you…

  • You are setting up your first espresso machine (Bambino Plus, Gaggia Classic Pro, Silvia)
  • You want the lowest-risk entry into home espresso
  • You want Baratza's repair support
  • You make filter coffee and espresso

Look elsewhere if you…

  • You need stepless adjustment for serious dialing (buy the Fellow Opus)
  • You want flat-burr consistency (buy the Eureka Mignon Specialita)

What the Encore ESP Actually Is

The Baratza Encore ESP is not a new grinder.

It is the original Encore with a modified burr set that extends the grind range into espresso-fine territory.

The body, motor, and hopper are identical.

The difference is entirely in the burr configuration and adjustment calibration.

What "Espresso-Capable" Actually Means

Espresso extraction requires a particle size of roughly 200 to 400 microns.

Most filter grinders (including the standard Encore) do not reach these fine settings.

The Encore ESP is calibrated to reach settings fine enough for espresso with an appropriate pressure basket.

On a Gaggia Classic Pro with a stock 58mm basket, the Encore ESP produces consistently dialed shots at settings 4 to 8 (out of 40) with a 17g dose.

Retention: What to Expect

The Encore ESP retains about 1.5g between grinding sessions.

This means the first 1.5g of every dose is partially stale from the previous session.

For daily espresso users who grind the same beans, this is not a meaningful problem.

Stale grounds accumulate slowly and are pushed through by the fresh batch.

Grind Consistency at Espresso Settings

The Encore ESP produces conical-burr particle distribution: a primary peak at the target size and a secondary peak of fines.

These fines (particles smaller than the target size) contribute to espresso body and mouthfeel but can cause channeling if excessive.

At settings 5 through 8, the fines production is within the range that most espresso machines handle correctly.

With a quality distribution tool (WDT, distribution needle, or a simple toothpick) and consistent tamping, the Encore ESP produces well-extracted shots from beans across a range of roast levels.

Long-Term Ownership

Baratza's repair program is the defining reason to buy the Encore ESP over competing grinders at a similar price.

Baratza sells every replacement part, burrs, portafilter holder, hopper, motor, individually.

They offer a flat-rate repair service.

Community forums have detailed repair guides.

Answers

Frequently asked questions

Is the Baratza Encore ESP worth it over the standard Encore?

Yes, if you use espresso. The standard Encore cannot reach espresso-fine settings. The Encore ESP has an extended fine range that the standard Encore lacks. If you only drink filter coffee, buy the standard Encore. If you drink espresso, the ESP is the correct choice.

What espresso machines pair best with the Encore ESP?

The Breville Bambino Plus, Gaggia Classic Pro, Rancilio Silvia, and Delonghi Dedica are the correct pairings. These semi-automatic machines benefit most from the Encore ESP's range. The machine ceiling and the grinder ceiling are well matched at this price tier.

Can the Encore ESP do filter coffee too?

The Encore ESP covers filter settings as well as the standard Encore. It has 40 settings that span espresso-fine through coarse French press. The ESP is a genuine all-purpose grinder, not an espresso-only specialty tool.

How does the Encore ESP compare to the Eureka Mignon Specialita?

The Eureka Mignon Specialita produces more uniform espresso grinds, has stepless micrometric adjustment, and uses 55mm flat burrs versus the Encore ESP's 40mm conical burrs. The Eureka costs roughly 3x more. For most home espresso setups, the Encore ESP is adequate. The Eureka is the upgrade when you have identified that the ESP is the limiting factor.
