UGREEN NASync DXP2800 Review

UGREEN's DXP2800 brought something to the budget two-bay NAS market that established brands had been slow to offer: a modern Intel processor, 2.5-gigabit networking and NVMe slots at a mainstream price.

Our verdict

The UGREEN DXP2800 offers stronger hardware than most two-bay NAS units at its price, with a modern Intel chip, 2.5GbE and NVMe slots. Its software is younger than Synology's, so it suits users who value hardware and flexibility over polish.

Fit check

Who should buy it?

A good fit if you…

  • Families centralizing photos and phone backups
  • Plex or Jellyfin users wanting hardware transcoding
  • Tinkerers who want Docker or alternative NAS software
  • Buyers with 2.5GbE networks

Look elsewhere if you…

  • Users who want the most mature NAS software
  • Anyone needing more than two drives
  • Buyers expecting the NAS alone to be a complete backup

What a 2-Bay NAS Does at Home

A network-attached storage box keeps family photos, phone backups and computer backups on drives you own, reachable from any device at home or remotely. With two drives in RAID 1, a single drive failure doesn't lose data.

RAID is not a backup, though. A NAS protects against a dead drive, not against deletion, ransomware or a house fire. Pair it with an offsite or cloud copy for anything irreplaceable.

Hardware Is the Headline

The Intel N100 is far faster than the ARM and older Celeron chips in many budget NAS units. It handles Docker containers, photo face recognition and hardware video transcoding for media servers like Plex or Jellyfin more comfortably.

The 2.5GbE port roughly doubles practical transfer speeds over gigabit Ethernet if your computer and switch support 2.5GbE. The two NVMe slots can serve as cache or as a fast storage pool, depending on software support.

UGOS Pro vs Synology DSM

UGREEN's UGOS Pro covers file sharing, backup, photo albums, remote access and Docker. It has improved quickly since launch, but Synology's DSM still has a longer track record, more polished apps and a larger community.

A plus for tinkerers: users have reported that the DXP2800 can run alternative operating systems such as TrueNAS or Unraid, though doing so is at your own risk regarding warranty and support.

Drawbacks and Ownership

Two bays limit expansion: to grow storage later, you replace both drives with larger ones. Buy larger drives than you think you need. The single network port means no link aggregation.

Budget for drives designed for NAS use, such as WD Red Plus or Seagate IronWolf, which are built for continuous operation. Total cost is the enclosure plus two drives.
