Buying advice: routers

  1. Single routers suit apartments and compact homes. Mesh systems cover larger or multi-story homes and brick walls.
  2. Wi-Fi 6 is widely supported. 6E and 7 add the 6 GHz band, which is fast but shorter range.
  3. Connecting mesh nodes with Ethernet greatly improves speed if your home has wiring.
  4. Multi-gig ports matter for plans above 1 Gbps or fast home networks. Count LAN ports for consoles and PCs.
  5. Choose a brand with regular firmware updates. Change default passwords and enable WPA3 where devices support it.
