Step by step

How to fix it

Work through these in order, the most common causes come first.

  1. Problem: Ring Light Won't Turn On

Check 1: USB power source. USB-powered ring lights need at least 5V/1.5-2A. Test by plugging into a USB wall adapter rated 10W or higher.

  2. Problem: Ring Light Flickering

If the ring light is on a circuit with a wall dimmer switch, the dimmer may be incompatible. Test by plugging into a non-dimmer outlet. Check 2: Power adapter output.

  3. Problem: Partial LED Sections Not Working

Individual LED strip sections can fail independently. This is caused by LED failure in the strip or a broken solder connection. It is generally not field-repairable, the ring light should be replaced.

Check 1: USB power source.

USB-powered ring lights need at least 5V/1.5-2A.

Test by plugging into a USB wall adapter rated 10W or higher.

If it works from the wall adapter but not from a laptop port, the laptop port is underpowered.

Check 2: Power cable seating.

Check 2: Power adapter output.

A failing or underpowered adapter produces unstable voltage that causes flickering.

Replace the adapter with a new unit of the correct rating.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my ring light turn on?

The most common cause for a ring light not turning on is an inadequate power source. USB-powered ring lights require a 5V/2A (10W) USB port, many laptop USB-A ports provide only 5V/0.5A which is insufficient. Try connecting to a USB wall adapter instead. Also check that the power cable is fully seated at both the ring and the power source.

Why is my ring light flickering?

Ring light flickering is usually caused by the LED driver failing, the driver converts AC or USB power to the stable DC the LEDs require. On budget ring lights, driver failure is common within the first 1-2 years. A less common cause is a dimmer switch incompatibility (for mains-powered ring lights on dimmer circuits). Replace the driver or replace the ring light.

Why do parts of my ring light not work?

Ring lights use LED strips in sections. When one section goes dark while others remain lit, it typically means a section of the LED strip has failed or a solder connection on the strip has broken. This is generally not repairable on budget ring lights, replacement is more cost-effective than attempting a repair.
