Most office chair marketing focuses on lumbar support and mesh breathability. The actual determinants of chair quality are mechanisms, sizing, and adjustment range. This guide explains what to look fo

Why Ergonomic Chair Marketing Is Misleading
The word has no regulatory definition and requires no certification.
A chair with a foam lumbar pillow and height adjustment qualifies for the label by marketing convention.
The meaningful distinctions between chairs are: What adjustments are available and how many dimensions each adjusts in How the backrest interacts with your spine (static vs dynamic) What the actual weight and size limits are
Adjustments: What You Need and What Is Optional
Required for a functional ergonomic chair: Seat height: the most important adjustment.
Your feet should rest flat on the floor with thighs parallel to the ground.
Lumbar support height: the support should contact the curve of your lower back, not your mid-back.
Fixed lumbar pillows that cannot adjust in height fit approximately one body proportion.
Seat depth: adjusts how far the seat extends toward your knees.
Static vs Dynamic Backrests
A static backrest provides fixed support in one position.
Most chairs have static backrests with adjustable lumbar positions.
A dynamic backrest flexes or adjusts with your movement.
The Steelcase Leap's LiveBack system is the most notable example in the consumer market, the backrest has two zones that flex independently with the position of your upper and lower back.
For most people who sit in a relatively consistent position, a static backrest with well-positioned lumbar support is adequate.
Backrest Height
Backrest height determines which part of your spine receives support.
A full-height backrest extends to shoulder blade level or above.
At standing height, this is approximately 22-24 inches of backrest from the seat surface.
A headrest adds support above the shoulder blades for the neck.
This is useful during recline; during upright sitting, many people find headrests push the head forward.
Seat Pan Construction
The seat pan is where you sit.
Waterfall front edge: a slight downward curve at the front of the seat reduces pressure behind the knees.
Common in premium chairs; absent in many budget options.
The seat that felt comfortable in a showroom may feel significantly firmer after 18 months.
High-density foam or molded foam maintains shape for longer.
Weight and Size Limits
Chair weight limits are structural ratings, not recommendations.
A 250-lb chair does not provide worse support for a 200-lb user than a 350-lb chair.
The relevant consideration is whether your weight is within the rated limit.
Using a chair beyond its structural limit is a safety concern, not merely a comfort concern.
Size matters separately from weight.
Warranty: The Real Quality Signal
An office chair manufacturer's warranty is the most direct signal of their quality confidence.
Herman Miller and Steelcase both offer 12-year warranties covering all materials and mechanisms.
This means they expect the chair to function without material defect for 12 years.
Most other manufacturers offer 5-year warranties on frames and shorter periods on mechanisms and upholstery.
Budget chairs often have 1-2 year warranties.
The Refurbished Market
Herman Miller Aeron and Steelcase Leap chairs are available refurbished at 40-60% of new price from certified refurbishers and on secondary markets.
Both companies produce chairs that remain functional well beyond their warranty periods with normal use.
A 5-year-old Aeron in good condition from a reputable refurbisher is a reasonable alternative to a new lower-tier chair at similar price.
Verify that the refurbisher offers a warranty on the refurbished unit (typically 1-2 years from refurbishers) and has a return policy.
The risk with used chairs: mechanism wear in heavily used examples (8+ hours daily in commercial settings), upholstery condition, and the inability to verify the chair's actual history.
What to Ignore
Lumbar pillow rating: a separate lumbar pillow attached with straps is not equivalent to an integrated adjustable lumbar support.
Pillows shift position, create pressure points at the straps, and fall when you lean forward.
Gaming chair marketing: gaming chairs are typically bucket seats with aggressive bolstering designed for racing aesthetics.
They provide less ergonomic adjustability than task chairs at equivalent prices.
The Secretlab Titan Evo is an exception with its integrated adjustable lumbar, but it remains a bucket seat design.
