Everything you need to know about how to position a desk lamp: placement rules that prevent eye strain, explained plainly.
Rule 1: Lamp on the non-dominant side Your dominant hand casts a shadow toward the paper or keyboard when the lamp is on the same side. The shadow edge is a source of visual contrast that strains the eyes over extended sessions.
Desk lamps and monitors create a specific conflict: any lamp bright enough to light the desk also risks creating a glare spot on the monitor screen. Position the lamp behind and to the side of the monitor, not in front of it Angle the lamp head away from the screen surface
Reading requires more light than computer work because paper reflects less light than a monitor emits. For reading physical books or documents: Lamp should be 12-18 inches from the reading material

Left lamp for right-handers, right lamp for left-handers.
For computer work, this matters less because you are reading from a screen, not a paper surface.
Position for monitor glare prevention instead (see below).

Position the lamp behind and to the side of the monitor, not in front of it Angle the lamp head away from the screen surface Use a lower brightness setting than you would for paper reading A monitor light bar (such as the BenQ ScreenBar) eliminates this problem by design, it mounts on the monitor and directs light downward so the beam never hits the screen.
For monitor-centric setups, it is a more elegant solution than repositioning a traditional lamp.

Place the lamp on the opposite side from your dominant writing hand. For right-handed people, lamp goes on the left, so your hand does not cast a shadow over what you're writing. For left-handed people, the lamp goes on the right. For computer work, the dominant-hand rule matters less; position the lamp to avoid screen glare.
The lamp head should be at roughly eye level or slightly above when you are seated in your normal working position. Too low creates glare from the bulb; too high makes the light source visible and uncomfortable. For a standard 30-inch desk with a seated eye height of 44-48 inches, a lamp height of 18-24 inches above the desk surface is the typical range.
Desk lamp eye strain has three common causes: the bulb is directly visible from your seated position (add a shade or lower the lamp head); the lamp is too bright relative to the room light (reduce lamp brightness or increase room ambient light); or the color temperature is too cool (above 5500K) for extended evening work (switch to a warmer 3000-4000K setting).
