Step-by-Step Guide
Manual grease guns (pistol grip, lever, and mini) require no power source but take more effort per shot. Pistol-grip: single-handed operation, consistent pressure per trigger pull, best for general shop use with moderate greasing tasks (wheel bearings, chassis fittings).
The Grease Gun Decision in Plain Terms
For most home mechanics and automotive DIYers, the choice is simpler than the shelf makes it look: The Lincoln Lubrication 1162 and the LockNLube LNL152 are both reliable in this category. Cartridge fill, standard coupler, done.
What Happens If You Buy the Wrong Pressure Rating
This is the most consequential spec mistake people make when buying grease guns. A standard pistol-grip gun develops 3,000-7,000 PSI.
Grease Gun Accessories Worth Having
Extra coupler styles: the standard coupler included with most guns fits SAE 1/4-inch button-head zerks, which covers 80% of fittings. A needle coupler (for recessed or hard-to-reach zerks) and a 90-degree angle coupler (for fittings behind guards or framing) cover most of the remaining cases.

Cartridge fill, standard coupler, done.
Maintenance work in a shop or field with 20+ fittings per session: a cordless grease gun (Milwaukee 2446, Lincoln 1884, Dewalt DCGG571) eliminates hand fatigue from lever operation and runs at air-gun output speeds.
The battery means it works where a compressor hose would not reach.
Fixed shop with a compressor already running: a pneumatic grease gun delivers continuous flow without battery management.
What Happens If You Buy the Wrong Pressure Rating
This is the most consequential spec mistake people make when buying grease guns.
A standard pistol-grip gun develops 3,000-7,000 PSI.
For a zerk fitting that requires 8,000 PSI to open (common on packed or neglected agricultural equipment), the gun will pump full strokes and nothing will enter the fitting.
The grease will not back up into the hose or blow the coupler off, it will simply refuse to enter, and you will think the fitting is hopelessly blocked.
The fix is a higher-pressure gun, not more effort on the current gun.

A needle coupler (for recessed or hard-to-reach zerks) and a 90-degree angle coupler (for fittings behind guards or framing) cover most of the remaining cases.
Grease gun whip hose: a flexible hose extension (12 or 18 inches) makes reaching zerks in awkward positions significantly easier without repositioning the gun.
Most guns accept standard hose extensions.
Extra cartridges of the correct grease type: having the right grease in stock before the maintenance session is the overlooked step.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know how much grease to inject into a fitting?
Over-greasing is as damaging as under-greasing, excess pressure blows the grease seal and expels the grease that was protecting the bearing. For most automotive and light-equipment zerks: inject until you see fresh grease appear at the seal lip. Count the number of pumps and record it for future reference, a wheel bearing might take 3 pumps, a U-joint 1 pump. For fittings with a grease nipple that vents: pump until the vent releases. Do not force grease against resistance, if a zerk feels blocked, switch to a needle coupler and check the fitting before continuing.
What type of grease should I use?
NLGI grade 2 multipurpose lithium grease handles most automotive chassis, wheel bearing, and general purpose applications. For high-temperature applications (brake components, oven conveyor bearings): use a high-temp red grease rated for the operating temperature. For marine or wet environments: a water-resistant marine grease. For food-processing equipment: NSF H1-rated food-grade grease. Do not mix grease types, different base oils and thickeners are chemically incompatible and can break down lubrication properties. If switching grease types: purge the old grease fully before switching.
Why is grease coming out around the coupler instead of into the fitting?
Grease bypassing the coupler is a coupler-to-zerk mismatch. Cause 1: the zerk is a metric size (common on European vehicles) while the coupler is SAE, use a metric coupler. Cause 3: the coupler ball check is worn, replace the coupler. Cause 4: insufficient engagement angle, reposition the coupler to engage squarely with the zerk.
Can I use a grease gun for all lubricants?
Grease guns are designed for grease (semi-solid lubricants) only. They are not suitable for oil injection or thin lubricants, the valve and check ball are designed for the viscosity and pressure of grease. For oil fittings on older equipment: use an oil can. For chain lube or penetrating oil: use the appropriate aerosol or drip applicator.
