Setup and Initial Calibration
Setup is straightforward, level the build plate with the provided paper method, install the FEP film (pre-installed on our unit), and run a test print.
Elegoo includes a calibration print (exposure calibration tower) that takes 15 minutes and tells you exactly where to set exposure time for your chosen resin.
Each needed slightly different exposure settings (2.2s, 2.4s, and 2.1s respectively at default parameters), which took an afternoon to dial in but produced perfect results thereafter.
Print Quality: Miniatures
This is where the Saturn 4 Ultra earns its score.
We printed 28mm DnD miniatures, Warhammer Space Marines, and jewelry test masters.
The 19 µm XY resolution captures detail that's visible only under magnification, sword wire wrapping, chainmail individual links, facial features with genuine expression.
Comparison prints against the previous Saturn 3 Ultra showed the 4's tilt mechanism produces fewer layer separation artifacts on thin horizontal surfaces.
Print Quality: Jewelry and Engineering
For jewelry masters (pieces designed for lost-resin casting), the Saturn 4 Ultra performs admirably.
Ring shanks, stone seat details, and pavé patterns come out clean.
We use Siraya Tech Cast resin for casting masters, it burns out more completely than standard ABS-like resins.
The large plate is particularly useful for printing multiple tolerance variants simultaneously.
The Tilt Mechanism and Speed
The Saturn 4 Ultra's tilt mechanism is genuinely faster and more reliable than the FEP peel method on older printers.
Traditional peel requires lifting the build plate straight up to separate the print from the FEP film, a violent action that can fail thin supports.
The tilt mechanism instead peels the FEP at an angle, dramatically reducing the separation force.
In practice: prints that failed on an older Saturn 2 due to broken supports completed successfully on the Saturn 4 Ultra with identical support settings.
Resin Compatibility and Running Costs
The Saturn 4 Ultra works with any 405nm resin from any manufacturer, a critical advantage over proprietary systems.
All worked with minor exposure adjustments.
This undercuts injection-molded resin costs significantly for anyone painting miniatures at scale.
Who Should Buy the Elegoo Saturn 4 Ultra?
Buy it if: you paint tabletop miniatures and want to print your own models, you make jewelry and need a casting master printer, you're a dental lab or product prototyper needing ±0.05mm accuracy, or you're upgrading from an older 4K/6K resin printer.
Skip it if: you're brand new to resin printing and not ready to handle chemical safety precautions, you only need one or two miniatures occasionally (start with a Mars-class printer instead), or your use case is functional mechanical parts (FDM is more practical).

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a wash and cure station for the Saturn 4 Ultra?
Yes, this is not optional. Uncured resin on print surfaces must be washed off with isopropyl alcohol (IPA) or a water-washable resin cleaner, then the print must be post-cured under UV light. Budget this into your total cost.
What is the difference between the Saturn 4 Ultra and Saturn 3 Ultra?
The Saturn 4 Ultra has a faster tilt mechanism (vs older FEP peel on the Saturn 3), slightly higher print speed, and improved COB light source for more even UV distribution. For most miniature printing, the Saturn 4's faster mechanism and more even cure are worth the premium. For tall scenic pieces, the Saturn 3's 260 mm height is an advantage.
Is the Elegoo Saturn 4 Ultra safe to use indoors?
With precautions, yes. You need: ventilation (open window or dedicated air filtration, the Saturn 4 has a built-in carbon filter but it's a secondary measure), nitrile gloves when handling uncured resin, and proper disposal of IPA/resin waste (cure liquid waste in sunlight before disposal, do not pour down drains). Never let uncured resin contact skin. With these precautions in place, it's safe for home use in a ventilated room.
