Everything you need to know about electric kettle not boiling fast enough: 8 fixes, explained plainly.
Work through these in order, the most common causes come first.
Mineral scale is responsible for the majority of slow-boiling complaints. It forms from hard water, the calcium and magnesium dissolved in most municipal tap water deposit on the heating element as a pale white or gray crust. This crust insulates the element and requires more energy and time to transfer heat through it.

Unplug (or remove batteries) for a full 60 seconds, not 5. This clears fault states that a quick toggle won't.
Try a different outlet, cable, and adapter. A surprising share of 'dead' devices are starved by a failing cable.
Look up the model's reset combination (usually holding a button 10+ seconds). Reconfigure from scratch afterward.

The scale fix is descaling.
After descaling, boiling time returns to normal in most cases.

Cold tap water takes longer to boil than room-temperature water, this is not a kettle malfunction. A kettle starting from 40°F tap water takes approximately 30 to 60 seconds longer than one starting from 65°F room-temperature water. The difference is more noticeable in regions with very cold winter water. Let the tap run briefly or use filtered water at room temperature to reduce this variability.
A slow kettle from scale or low wattage is not dangerous, it is just inconvenient. A kettle that makes sparking sounds, produces a burning smell, or shows visible damage to the power cord or base: unplug it immediately. These indicate electrical faults that create fire or shock risk. Do not use a kettle with visible cord damage, a cracked body, or a non-functioning auto shut-off.
Descaling, cleaning the base contact, and testing on a different outlet are safe DIY tasks. Opening the kettle body to access the heating element is not safe and voids any warranty, the heating element is a sealed component near water. If descaling and electrical cleaning do not restore normal boiling time, the kettle requires replacement. Contact the manufacturer warranty department first for kettles under warranty.
