Everything you need to know about how to descale a coffee maker: complete guide for all brands, explained plainly.
Descaling solution (Breville, Dezcal, or Urnex brand) or white vinegar Clean container to collect output
Step 1: Empty the machine Remove any coffee grounds, filters, and water from the reservoir. Step 2: Prepare the descaling solution Mix according to package directions.
For single-serve machines, follow the same principle but use the machine's built-in descale mode if available: Fill the reservoir with descaling solution per instructions Activate descale mode (usually by holding specific button combinations, check manual)
The Breville Precision Brewer has a CALC/CLEAN indicator. Fill the water tank with the descaling solution mixed per instructions Hold the CLEAN button for 3 seconds, the machine enters descale mode
During the descaling cycle, brownish or chalky residue in the output is normal, that is dissolved scale. After descaling, brewing should: Return to normal cycle time Produce hotter coffee (restored boiler efficiency)

The Breville Precision Brewer has a CALC/CLEAN indicator.
Fill the water tank with the descaling solution mixed per instructions Hold the CLEAN button for 3 seconds, the machine enters descale mode The cycle takes approximately 60 minutes Rinse with two full tanks of clean water
During the descaling cycle, brownish or chalky residue in the output is normal, that is dissolved scale.

In hard water areas (water with high mineral content), descale every 1-3 months. In soft water areas, every 3-6 months is adequate. Most modern coffee makers have a descale indicator light that triggers based on brew cycle count, use it as a minimum, not a maximum. If your coffee takes longer to brew or the machine makes unusual sounds during brewing, descale regardless of the indicator.
White vinegar works as a descaling agent and is less expensive than branded solutions. The tradeoff is that vinegar requires more rinse cycles to fully clear the taste and smell. Use a 1:1 ratio of white vinegar to water, run the full brew cycle, then run two to three full cycles with plain water. Some manufacturers void warranties if vinegar is used, check your manual.
Slow brewing after descaling usually means scale was not fully removed, or the descaling solution was not adequately rinsed out. Run additional plain water cycles. If slow brewing persists, the scale may require a second descaling treatment with a stronger solution or longer soak time.
