27" at 1440p is the sweet spot for most desk work; 4K shines at 27–32" for design and text sharpness. Match resolution to your GPU for gaming.
60 Hz is fine for office work; 120–144 Hz+ makes motion visibly smoother for gaming and even cursor movement.
Height, tilt, swivel, and pivot adjustment matter more than people expect, or budget for a VESA monitor arm.
USB-C with power delivery turns a monitor into a laptop dock with one cable. Check wattage covers your laptop's charger.

IPS: best color accuracy and viewing angles for work/design. VA: deeper contrast for movies. OLED: perfect blacks and response times, with burn-in considerations for static desktop use.
At 27 inches, 4K (3840x2160) provides 163 pixels per inch, noticeably sharper than 1440p (109 PPI) for text and fine UI details. For daily work involving text, spreadsheets, and web content, 4K at 27 inches is the sweet spot where pixel density improvement is clearly visible without requiring scaling. For gaming, 4K at 27 inches requires a powerful GPU, an RTX 4070 Ti or RX 7900 GRE at minimum for 60fps in demanding titles.
IPS panels (Dell UltraSharp series, LG Nano IPS) provide the best combination of color accuracy and viewing angles for work and creative use, the standard recommendation for professionals. OLED panels provide the best contrast and black levels but cost significantly more and have potential burn-in concerns for static UI elements. VA panels provide higher contrast than IPS at a lower price but slower pixel response times. For general work use: IPS. For content consumption and gaming: OLED if budget allows, IPS otherwise.
60Hz at 4K is the baseline for gaming and is adequate for most game genres, strategy, RPG, and narrative games where high frame rates are not critical. For competitive shooters (FPS, battle royale), 60Hz is noticeably less smooth than 144Hz regardless of resolution, and the input latency at 60Hz is perceptible to experienced players. Gaming monitors designed for 4K gaming (LG 27GR83Q, Samsung Odyssey Neo G7) offer 144Hz at 4K via DisplayPort 1.4.
4K at 60Hz requires HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4 minimum. HDMI 1.4 is limited to 4K at 30Hz. USB-C alt-mode (Thunderbolt 3/4, USB4) supports 4K at 60Hz if the cable is rated for video output. For 4K at 144Hz: DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.1 required. Check both the monitor input and the GPU output specifications, the limiting factor is the lower-rated connection.
At a typical arm-length desk distance (60 to 80cm), 27 inches is the most recommended size, large enough for split-screen multitasking and comfortable for single-window work. 32-inch monitors at the same desk distance can feel immersive for gaming but require head movement for edge-to-edge reading in office applications. Below 27 inches (24 inches), 1080p resolution at arm's length is noticeably less sharp than 1440p on a 27-inch monitor. For 34-inch ultrawide monitors, the same distance is comfortable for the wider field of view.
