About Keycaps

Replacing keycaps is one of the easiest ways to personalise a mechanical keyboard. Thick PBT caps resist the shine that ABS develops over time and tend to sound deeper. Profiles change the height and shape of each row, which affects typing comfort.

Before buying, confirm the set covers your layout, especially the bottom row and any non-standard key sizes.

How to choose keycaps

PBT vs ABS

PBT is harder and resists shine. ABS allows brighter colors and crisper legends but becomes glossy with use.

Profile

Cherry and OEM are common sculpted profiles. SA is tall and retro. XDA and DSA are flat and uniform.

Layout coverage

Check the bottom row sizes, split spacebars and ISO vs ANSI enter keys. Many sets list the layouts they support.

Legends

Doubleshot and dye-sublimated legends don't wear off. Shine-through legends work with backlighting.

Switch stems

Most sets fit MX-style cross stems. Low-profile and some optical switches need specific caps.

Keycaps: common questions

What is the best keycap to buy?

One of our strongest picks is the Razer Doubleshot PBT Keycap Upgrade Set, a standout in our Best Keycap Sets for Gaming 2026 list. The SteelSeries PrismCaps Pudding Keycaps is another excellent choice.

How do I choose the right keycaps?

Start with your main use and budget, then compare our shortlists: Best Artisan Keycaps 2026, Best Keycap Sets for Gaming 2026, Best Keycap Sets 2026.

What should I look for when buying keycaps?

PBT is harder and resists shine. ABS allows brighter colors and crisper legends but becomes glossy with use.

What profile comes on most stock keyboards?

OEM profile is the default on most shipping mechanical keyboards. It is slightly taller than Cherry with a more pronounced forward tilt on each row. Cherry profile is shorter and more subtle in its row sculpting.

Can I mix keycap profiles?

Technically yes, the stems are the same (Cherry MX-compatible). Aesthetically, mixing profiles creates visual height inconsistency. Functionally, mixed profiles create typing inconsistency across the keyboard. Not recommended except for artisan accent keycaps which are intended to be visually distinct.

Is MT3 profile good for everyday typing?

MT3 is excellent for dedicated typing use. The spherical tops and high profile reduce off-center key strikes significantly for touch typists. The adjustment period coming from OEM or Cherry profile is real, expect 1-3 days of slightly reduced typing speed while muscle memory re-calibrates. After adjustment, most typists prefer MT3 for long-form writing.

Are Drop keycaps compatible with standard keyboards?

MT3 keycap sets support standard layouts. Most sets include extras for common non-standard layouts (65%, TKL, full-size). Check the specific colorway's key count to confirm your layout is covered. Non-standard bottom rows on gaming keyboards may not be covered, verify before purchasing.

Can I put keycaps in the dishwasher?

Dishwashers use hot water above the safe temperature for ABS keycaps (warping risk) and the pressurized jets can damage legends. Hand washing in warm (not hot) water is safe for both ABS and PBT keycaps.
