An honest, research-based look at the Amazon Echo (4th Gen): what it does well, where it falls short, and who should actually buy it.
Who should buy it?
A good fit if you…
- Buyers prioritizing Smart home that fit their specific use case and budget.
Look elsewhere if you…
- Buyers who need a different feature set, check the alternatives below.
Design and Build Quality
The spherical design is distinct and compact.
At 5.7 inches tall, it fits on a kitchen counter, bookshelf, or side table without occupying significant footprint.
The fabric cover comes in five colors (charcoal, glacier white, twilight blue, deep sea blue, lavender) and does not attract dust the way the previous flat-top design did.
One practical note: the spherical base means the Echo needs a flat surface.
Audio Quality in Context
The Echo 4th Gen uses a 3-inch woofer and 0.8-inch tweeter.
Audio quality improved significantly from the 3rd Gen to the 4th Gen, with more low-frequency extension and less midrange harshness.
For voice calls, podcasts, and background music while cooking or cleaning: the Echo sounds appropriate.
For active music listening or as the main speaker in a room where you actually want to hear your music: the Google Nest Audio at the same price is better.
Voice Recognition: Where Echo Leads
The 7-microphone array is where the Echo genuinely outperforms most alternatives.
False wake rates were low at around 1-2 per week of normal use.
Alexa command response was fast, typically under 2 seconds from wake word to action.
Natural language comprehension is less impressive.
The Zigbee Hub: the Real Differentiator
The Echo 4th Gen includes a built-in Zigbee hub.
This is the device's most meaningful technical advantage over competitors.
What Zigbee hub means practically: Philips Hue bulbs, IKEA Tradfri devices, Aqara sensors, Amazon Basics smart home devices, and hundreds of other Zigbee-compatible devices can pair directly to the Echo without any additional hardware.
Pairing Zigbee devices to the Echo: hold the device in pairing mode, say "Alexa, discover devices," and the Echo finds and pairs compatible Zigbee devices automatically.
Alexa Routines: the Automation Layer
Alexa Routines allow trigger-action automation: "When I say Good Morning, turn on the kitchen lights, start the coffee maker (via smart plug), and tell me the weather and my first calendar event." Schedule triggers (specific time, sunrise/sunset) Device triggers (motion sensor detection, smart lock state change) App-based triggers (Guard mode, arrival/departure via phone location) Routine complexity supports multiple actions with delays between them.
This is the most mature voice-triggered automation system at this price point.
Privacy Controls
Echo includes a hardware mute button that disconnects the microphone array, the LED ring turns orange to confirm hardware mute.
Amazon stores voice interactions on their servers by default.
To delete recordings: Alexa app > History > Voice History > Delete all recordings.
You can also enable "Don't save recordings" in settings, which processes commands without retaining audio.
Should You Buy It?
Buy the Amazon Echo 4th Gen if: You are building an Alexa-based smart home and want the Zigbee hub You want flexible voice-triggered automation via Routines Audio quality for background listening is acceptable and not a priority
