Who This Review Is for
This review addresses one specific question: who should buy AirPods Pro 2 in 2026, given that the competition has had over two years to respond.
The answer is: iPhone users, specifically.
For everyone else, there are better options at the same price.
Design and Fit
The AirPods Pro 2 use a silicone ear tip with a short stem that extends below the ear.
The stem design is Apple's signature look and is more polarizing than functional, Jabra and Samsung have moved to different form factors that many users find less visually prominent.
The ear tips come in XS, S, M, and L sizes.
The Ear Tip Fit Test in iOS plays a tone and uses the internal microphone to measure how well your ear tip seals against your canal.
Adaptive Audio: the Feature That Changed How We Use Earbuds
Adaptive Audio is the most significant ANC feature Apple has shipped since they introduced ANC to AirPods.
It monitors your environment continuously and adjusts the blend between noise cancellation and transparency in real time.
In practice: walking down a quiet side street, Adaptive Audio applies strong ANC.
Walking onto a busy main road, it pulls back slightly and lets you hear relevant environmental sounds without completely opening to the street.
ANC Performance Against Competitors
On pure ANC strength, the WF-1000XM5 beats AirPods Pro 2.
The difference is audible in direct comparison.
However, Adaptive Audio changes the comparison.
Pure ANC strength measured in a controlled environment does not reflect how ANC feels across a full day of varied environments.
Audio Quality and the AAC Limitation
AirPods Pro 2 are limited to AAC over Bluetooth.
There is no LDAC, no aptX, no aptX HD.
On iPhone, this is not a significant limitation because iOS does not support LDAC either, the ceiling for all iPhone earbuds is AAC.
The WF-1000XM5 delivers noticeably better audio quality through LDAC on Android.
Battery Life
The case provides additional charges for 30 hours total.
This is the best total battery capacity among premium ANC earbuds.
The case uses USB-C charging and supports MagSafe and Qi wireless charging.
A 5-minute charge provides approximately 1 hour of playback, which is a useful fast-charge ratio.
IPhone Integration Details
The integration features that differentiate AirPods from competitors on iPhone: Automatic setup: bring AirPods near your iPhone and they pair in under 5 seconds without going into Bluetooth settings.
Subsequent connections are automatic.
Cross-device switching: AirPods switch between your iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch based on which device is playing audio.
The switching is smooth and requires no manual input in most cases.
